I ran the usual long run today to begin the week. I am contemplating a 5k this upcoming Sunday. I feel that my endurance is up from last year, but I have not done much speed work lately. I hope that the two will "cancel" each other out, resulting in a similar times to last year. The USA Cross Country Championships are in Boulder this next weekend so I am definitely going to go watch some of the big names in running battle it out. It will be cool to see olympic-grade runners compete.

With increased endurance your 5 K times should be faster. It is true that somebody with a natural speed and not a lot of endurance will usually be faster in a 5 K than somebody with a lot of endurance and not a lot of natural speed. Even then, I can still beat a lot of people in a 5 K that would destroy me in a mile because they really lack in endurance.

However, for the same person, the variations in speed are usually much smaller than the variations in endurance when focused training is applied. So you should not worry too much about the lack of speed training.
